Google Tech TalksJuly 10, 2007ABSTRACTIn the Latin West, explaining the origin, meaning, and response to evil has been a central theological and cultural project, beginning with the magisterial work of St. Augustine in the 4th-5th centuries. If a good God created the world, how did evil enter it? For centuries the greatest minds fretted with such matters. But in the last century, the vocabulary of evil has fallen out of favor with many cultural elites who prefer syndromes to sin and maladjustment to wickedness. Children's literature had also backed off evil for years--too frightening for the young, it was believed. But evil plays a central role in the Harry Potter stories; in them, evil is...

I gotcha point

Bloodsport1:You are missing the point. My comment had nothing to do with the goodness or badness of practicing magic, and neither did anything Professor Elshtain said. If you think practicing magic is a bad thing, that is your opinion, but that is not the topic at hand in the video or in my comment. My point was that many commentators immediately jumped to the conclusion that Elshtain denounced Harry Potter as evil, which she clearly did not.

but you know what the WORD of GOD says all sorcery are evil. There is no difference between a good witch and a bad witch. White magic and black magic. Reason. KNOW THE SOURCE of that craft. Harry can be a wonderful dude but messing with sorcery is a big no no.

Evidently, some commentators did not even listen to what Professor Elshtain said. One of her main points is the cultural importance of talking about the concepts good and evil, something that fewer and fewer people publicly discuss, as she points out. She views the Harry Potter series as reengaging a public discourse on good and evil, something that she believes is NEEDED. She never said that the character Harry Potter or the series of books was evil. Listen to what she actually says!

yeah, no joke. these people "think" they're right.i've read/ watched harry potter and i'm not dead or surrounded by demons.
tippmann17 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
no i wasn't calling anybody an idiot. i just think it's silly to go on and on about this evil stuff. you can't have good without evil, it's that simple. harry potter is just a story about good v. evil. i've said that to everyone who thinks harry potter is evil. yeah, she points out all the evil in harry potter but there's also lot's of good. try looking at the positive. it's a great story and nobody can tell me otherwise.get over it people.
tippmann17 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
this is stupid, honestly. harry potter is just a freakin story about good v. evil. obviously they don't get it. all they worry about is the evil stuff....c'mon, if harry potter, lord of the rings and star wars didn't have evil in it then what kind of story would it be? THINK. there is opposition in all things. geez...you people give me headaches.

Oops, ignore my last paragraph there. It seems the lady is speaking FOR the Harry Potter series. I took it the wrong way! oopsie...well that last bit was to the people who hate potter then!! loland I was kidding about "aiding the devil"sarcasm...
ILikeThesePeople (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I love Harry Potter.I LOVE IT!And guess what, I'm a Christian!!*ohmygoodnessthatsimpossible*pshhhh. It's a story for the benefit of the imaginations of children and adults alike. Stop trying to make something soooo "good" oriented look "bad" or "evil."That's horrible. These people are doing the very thing they are speaking against...they are turning something good into something evil.TOO BAD you are actually AIDING the devil!-.-
