Its worse on the Irish Sea compared to the Alantic the reason is the Irish Sea is relatively shallow compared to the Alantic which is much deeper and the wind is able to whip up the seas apparently.

I used to sail on the mail boats before the car ferries. My late father sailed to Dunlaoghaire on the Leinster just before it was sunk. I love the present ferries.I sail to Holyhead this christmas.
